When you think of the days of the old settlers, a picture of horse-drawn carriages,
covered wagons, one-room school houses, general stores, sod houses, and a
simpler way of life enters your mind. That's exactly what you will find at Western
Nebraska's largest historical museum, the North Platte Valley Museum, where the
history of our valley comes alive. There are over two dozen displays throughout
the 10,000 square foot exhibit area, ranging from a family traveling on the Oregon
Trail in 1850s to Nebraska's first female doctor in the 1890s. For more pictures,

Nebraska area. The museum is a Wildlife Theatre...an Educational Display... with
Fossils and a pre-historic replica of a hornless rhinoceros of the extinct Baluchithere
(Ba¬lu-ka-thir), a replica of the world's largest mammal standing 19 feet tall and
30 feet long. A great family adventure.

This museum is housed in the old Burlington Railroad Depot, built in 1928. The
quaint brick structure was all but abandoned by Burlington Northern Railroad
Company in the 1990's. In 1994, volunteers wanting to preserve the history of
the old railroad and sugar beet factory town decided to convert the old depot
into a museum. It opened for it's first season in 1999 and is filled with many
historical items relating to Bayard, Chimney Rock, and the Valley, including
horse-drawn machinery. It has won 2 awards already in its short existence.
